History
The Hash House Harriers (HHH or H3) is a social running group that originated in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in the 1930s. The group was started by a group of British expatriates who were looking for a way to stay in shape and socialize while living abroad. They named the group after the Selangor Club, where they often met and which was nicknamed the “Hash House” due to the mediocre food served there.
The group’s runs, called “hashes,” involve a group of runners following a pre-set trail that is marked with paper or flour. The trail is set by a “hare,” who lays a trail for the runners to follow. The runners, or “hounds,” follow the trail and try to catch the hare. Along the way, there are often checkpoints and refreshments, and the group often stops at a bar or pub after the run for a social gathering.
The HHH has spread to many countries around the world and has become a popular social activity for runners of all abilities. The group is known for its informal, non-competitive atmosphere and its focus on having fun and socializing
